Check out these incredible photos of Claire Buchar and Stephanie Nychka going HUGE in the 2009 Gala Women’s Slopestyle at Crankworx. From the press release, photos and results sheet we thought there were only two women hitting these huge jumps, but competitor Katie Hayes set us straight (cheers Katie!):
I was also hitting the first few features in the boneyard, along with Lorraine Blancher, who went down off the wooden lip after the first drop. (My best wishes to her in a quick recovery!) I miscalculated a little bowl transfer line after the Kokanee wall and managed to bruise my foot pretty good, during practice :( and was not able to compete in the actual Gala. Thanks Claire, Steph and Lorraine for motivation and a sweet session!
When you watch a fair few freeride DVDs things start to look small on video, but these shots really show how massive the women were going. Thanks again to photographer Justa Jeskova for the amazing shots (click to see them full size).
Claire Buchar won Womenzworx – a judged riding event where competitors are awarded points for technique and style on various trail features. In the shot above, Claire’s adding some style into this huge drop as well.
That’s Stephanie Nychka doing some flying. She crashed trying a massive wallride for the first time – not just the first time for her, but the first time for ANYone. Turns out she needed more speed for the still-soft takeoff, but fortunately she walked away. Stephanie is an amazing rider, check out her blog here. It has far more details on what went down than we can tell you and a better insight than what you’d get in a press release.
Despite the crash, Stephanie was awarded a fifty-fifty win tied with Claire for the Slopestyle. Nice. Full results are here.
Whistler Creek Productions made this video of the event. Some big jumps, big crashes, and if you watch closely you can spot some riders you may recognize, including Katie Hayes and her signature no-footers.
